Are we talking about Menopause?
Menopause accounts for a third of a woman's life. Every year, 25 million women go through menopause and by 2025 there will be 1,2 billion post-menopausal women worldwide.(4) It is a natural process that begins, on average, at age 51(5 ).
Is it still a taboo? Society is changing and mentalities and lifestyles are changing. It's time to stop making a drama out of it! Like puberty, menopause is a time of hormonal changes. It marks a stage in a woman's life and begins a new perception of her body and her femininity.
The transition occurs gradually and in two phases:
– During the phase of entry into menopause, the peri-menopause, the first hormonal changes occur. It is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles and can have both physical (hot flashes, skin aging, changes in hair growth, weight gain, etc.) and psychological (mood changes, insomnia, etc.) impacts.
– Then comes the menopause phase, which is said to begin when the menstrual cycle has stopped for more than a year. During menopause some symptoms gradually decrease or disappear (hot flashes, mood swings...) while others intensify (signs of skin aging, osteoporosis...).
For over 20 years, Vichy has accompanied women in this important moment of their lives and even today Vichy reaffirms its commitment:
– Renewing the offer with NEOVADIOL to respond specifically and with new cutting-edge active ingredients to all the skin's needs in every phase of menopause
– Expanding access to information on menopause through expert advice (dermatologists, gynecologists, nutritionists and psychologists).

VICHY, PIONEER IN THE SCIENCE OF THE EXPOSOME
Since 1931 Vichy has been at the forefront of scientific skin research. A pioneer of exposome science, Vichy studies the changing needs of the skin at every stage of life.
Over the last 20 years Vichy has gone further, studying the impact of hormonal factors on the skin, to find targeted and effective dermocosmetic solutions.
The Exposome includes environmental factors (UV, pollution, etc.), lifestyle factors (smoking, stress, etc.) and hormonal variations.
HORMONES AND SKIN
Hormones are known to play a crucial role in skin balance and health throughout life. While the impacts of puberty and pregnancy are well known (hormonal acne, melasma, hair growth), those of menopause are rarely mentioned.
Over the last 20 years, Vichy has developed real expertise on the visible impact of hormonal changes on the skin during menopause, with more than 20 studies on over 1.200 women.
DURING MENOPAUSE, HORMONAL CHANGES TRIGGER DEEP CHANGES IN THE SKIN
Menopause is defined by a decline in the female hormone, estrogen. Its levels begin to decrease during peri-menopause, the entry phase, to reach a very low level during menopause.
On the skin, the impact can be felt in its different layers. Sebum production decreases and the epidermis thins, which alters the quality of the barrier function. Natural antioxidant defenses decrease. The synthesis of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid slows down. The consequences are visible: the skin is drier, thinner, loses tone and firmness, wrinkles are accentuated, while the presence of age spots increases.
A recent discovery has highlighted another key hormonal process: the increase in the level of cortisol(6)(7), the stress hormone. The phenomenon amplifies the alteration of the skin barrier and reduces the natural defense functions by decreasing collagen synthesis. Wrinkles, dryness and uneven skin tone increase.
