What is hyperpigmentation?
Pigmentation irregularities have different origins, such as melasma, spots caused by the sun or hyperpigmentation from post-acne marks. Considered a form of “persistent sign,” these irregularities appear when specialized cells, called melanocytes, become overactive. Melanocytes, present in the epidermis, produce melanin, the main component that gives color to the skin.
What causes hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation conditions occur when melanin builds up on the surface of the skin. For example, melasma is characterized by pigmented spots concentrated in the area of the upper lip, forehead and cheeks. More than 1 in 3 women can develop melasma2. Actinic lentigo, a condition often called "age spots", appears due to exposure to UV rays and is more common from the age of 40.
Young adults, on the other hand, are more subject to the appearance of signs of hyperpigmentation, which can appear following imperfections and other signs of acne-prone skin, stings, burns and redness from shaving. THE LINK BETWEEN IRREGULAR PIGMENTATION AND ALTERATION OF THE BALANCE OF MELANOGENESIS
THEalteration of the balance of melanogenesis is an irregularity of the physiological process that occurs when aggressive factors stimulate the skin's defense reactions and leads to the appearance of spots and hyperpigmentation.
UV rays and pollution are among the most common factors capable of triggering these alterations as a skin response. UVB rays cause a “cascade” reaction in response to what we know as a “sunburn”.
